For the next few weeks the Zoo Blog submissions will be posted by Paul Selvaggio, the Zoo's Creative Director, who is in South Africa with Zoo President and CEO Dr. Barbara Baker and Willie Theison, Manager of Zoo's Elephant Program, photographing an international research project they are working on.
9/13/09 - Conservation Research in Africa - Day 3
Posted by Paul Selvaggio, Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium Creative Director
Today we went out into the bush and knocked down our first bull (male) elephant. It was our test run to activate all the teams doing research. "Project Frozen Dumbo" has started. We are collecting semen from male elephants, that will be frozen and stored until they are used in artificial insemination of prospective female elephants.
Weather has been cloudy and overcast, but nice and light. Temps have been cool and breezy.
I will post more photos as I get connections, which are slow and expensive!
