This position is responsible for providing oversight and direction to the marketing and public relations department. Position has seven full-time direct reports and other part-time and seasonal staff.
•Oversees group sales, special events, media relations, facility rentals, marketing sponsorships and social media;
•Responsible for the supervision of seven full time staff and several seasonal staff;
•Creates and implements annual marketing and public relations strategic communication plans;
•Develops and monitors brand and branding strategy;
•Develops, implements, and monitors department budgets and marketing strategies;
•Develops and maintains relationships with local and national media; solicits feature coverage and strategies for crisis communications and serves as spokesperson;
•Works with advertising agencies to develop and implement image advertising;
•Oversees the planning and implementation of Zoo events and programs;
•Edits and proofreads Zoo publications, direct mail pieces, special events advertising and radio advertising in conjunction with Creative Services;
•Writes and supervises the design of print advertising; writes radio scripts and writes and assists in the production and editing of promotional spots for television;
•Purchases and negotiates radio and newspaper trades, promotions with radio and broadcast media and sustains relationships with sponsors and media;
•Develops and maintains corporate relationships for grant funding opportunities;
•Works with members of the board of directors and on special committees of the board;
•Participates in department head and senior operations team meetings;
•Schedules coupon promotions;
•Develops and maintains website and all social media sources.

•Is knowledgeable of location of exhibits, restrooms, concessions, rentals, etc.
•Disposes of litter and waste throughout the park and zoo facilities.
Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communication, journalism or a related field; masters preferred, minimum of 10 years related experience and five years supervisory experience. Position involves a high PC proficiency, as well as excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
Manual dexterity to operate office machinery such as personal computer, telephone, facsimile machine, copier, calculator, etc. Position works primarily in an office setting, but works within the confines of the park as needed; especially when working with the media to cover animal events or special events. Must be available to work nights, weekends and holidays. Some travel is required and must be able to work on call.
