Anxiously Awaiting Baby Elephants - 7/31/2008
The Zoo is waiting on baited breath for the births of baby elephants from mothers Moja and Savannah. As of now, each has had a longer pregnancy that when they carried Victoria and Callee. An African elephant’s gestation period is usually between 18 to 23 months. July 1st marked just about 21½-months for both elephant moms. Elephants typically only have one offspring and our ultrasounds suggest that each elephant is carrying only one calf. Several weeks ago progesterone levels (which indicate when delivery is expected) dropped on Savannah, which indicated birth was coming soon. But then the levels went back up. They have remained stable since. However, based on the elephants’ behavior and the intuition of the keepers who care for them every day, we are expecting that at least one to be born at any time. If all goes well with the births, the keepers will watch the bonding processes between mom and baby, as well as the herd, before deciding when to put the babies out on exhibit for the public. If the babies are healthy and all goes well, they could come out into the Elephant Yard as early as three days after births. Sign up for our Z-mail alert list and you will be one of the first to know about the baby elephant births. Send an e-mail to tgray@pittsburghzoo.org and you will receive a notice about the births, plus monthly updates about special events and news at the Zoo. We do not share your e-mail address with other parties and you can opt out at any time.
