New and Improved Website Launch

Oh, what a new-fangled web we weave!

August 20, 2024

Welcome to the new pittsburghzoo.org!

Our Zoo team has been working hard behind the scenes over the last few months to deliver a website that is better, faster, and more accessible. Please click around and explore! You will find a whole new look and refreshed navigation for the animals and programs you love. We are so pleased to present this new way to find out what’s happening at your neighborhood Zoo.

The plan to update the website started in 2023 with a focus on five key points based on direct input from Zoo guests: accessibility, improved navigation, mobile-friendliness, speed, and a sense of wonder. With generous assistance from an Allegheny RAD Accessibility & Inclusion Grant, the Zoo was able to put the needs of our guests first and work with AZA digital partner Speak Creative to redesign the site.

Every single page on our website was rebuilt from the ground up – over 160 pages worth of content! Layouts, text, and images were all considered, not just to look nice, but to help our guests get the information they need. Navigation was updated based on frequently asked questions. Material was designed for mobile use, as most of our visitors check our site on the go. Every guest also gets to connect with wildlife, as the site has been updated to meet W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines.

Among the improvements, guests will find planning their visit easier with clearer basic Zoo information, daily activities, and “know before you go” event details. Featured animals have quick facts and bright new pictures. There are new ways to learn and support the conservation initiatives happening right here in Pittsburgh. The International Conservation Center also gets to feature more prominently as a feature site, thanks to assistance from the Somerset County Tourism Grant.

We are excited to launch this new site, just in time to launch ticket sales for our new Jack O’Lantern Extravaganza on Thursday, August 22.

Our website updates nearly every day with news, events, and improvements. Even though the site is new, we are not finished! We are continuing to make our site better for you; more animal pages, online activities, conservation initiatives, posts, and greater social connectivity are all coming soon. We will continue to listen to your requests and take the lead in inspiring conservation action, both here and around the world, in person and digitally.
