Your Zoo is dedicated to inclusivity and accessibility
February 1, 2025
At the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium, we believe everyone should have the opportunity to share the wonder of the animal world. A key part of our mission is to ensure that one wild experience is welcoming to all. Many programs and amenities are designed to make the Zoo and its programs accessible to our neighbors in southwestern Pennsylvania. These include:
Admission Discounts:
- OpporZOOnity Program – A modification of the 2023-2024 “Museums for All” program, the new OpporZOOnity Program, launching February 2025, provides affordable admission for residents of select counties who meet eligibility requirements. This new program will streamline the admission process, as well as alert you about other discounted Zoo opportunities. You must apply prior to your visit online only with a valid EBT card and a government-issued photo ID. For program details and to apply, please visit Plan Your Visit – Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium.
- Regional Asset District Summer Staycation – A limited number of free Zoo admissions may be booked with a valid Allegheny County Library Card through this summer program, which was immensely popular last year and is expected to return in summer 2025.
- Zoo Campership – To make our award-winning Zoo Camp accessible to campers who otherwise could not afford to attend, scholarships are available to cover the cost of registration, before-and-after camp care, a transportation stipend, and daily lunch.
- Ticket Donations – The Zoo often provides qualifying non-profit organizations with two complimentary tickets for the purpose of fundraising activities. There are a limited number of tickets available, so it is not always possible to honor every request. A donation form is available at Ticket Donation Request – Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium (article continues below ⇓)
Accessibility
- Helping Guests with Special Needs – Sensory bags containing special badges, fidget tools, noise-canceling headphones, and other resources are available for checkout at no cost at our admission gates. For guests who are visually impaired, sighted guides and audio description may be obtained. For guests who are hearing impaired, sign language interpretation is available. These tours are provided free of charge but must be scheduled at least two weeks in advance of your visit. Visit our Accessibility page for details: Accessibility – Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium
- Improvements for Families – Guests wishing to use a private nursing area may find lactation rooms throughout the Zoo. Baby changing stations are available in all restrooms throughout the park, while an adult changing table is located in The Islands in our family restroom. Further recent and upcoming updates include new sliding doors on public buildings, additional benches, and the summer return of the tram for mobility assistance.
- Sensory Friendly Mornings – Introduced in 2024, the Zoo plans to bring Sensory Friendly Mornings back to the Zoo mid-2025. Opening half an hour early on select dates, guests can experience the park with lower crowds for a calmer experience. Keep an eye on our Events page for upcoming dates: Events – Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium
