TRAM FAQ

Interested in renting the Tram? Please fill out the form at the bottom of this page.

Q: When does the Tram operate?

A: The Tram operates daily (weather-permitting) between Memorial Day and Labor Day between 9:30 am and 5:30 pm. Between April 1 and Memorial Day (and Labor Day through October 15), the Tram will operate on weekends only between 9:30 am and 5:30 pm. The Tram does not operate in the off-season. Due to larger than normal attendance, the Tram will not operate on RAD Day, October 15, or during ZooBoo (October 21, 22, 28, and 29).

Q: What is the Tram route?

A: There are 8 stops throughout the Zoo, where visitors can hop on and off. These are marked with a “T.” The Tram travels the main loop through the Zoo: from the entrance Village at the top of the escalator, through the Forest Passage and African Savanna, past the Aquarium and Kids Kingdom to return to the Village. Riders are welcome to exit the Tram at Tram Stops to spend extra time at exhibits or explore additional indoor or off-route areas, such as the Tropical Forest Complex, the Islands and Jungle Odyssey, the Aquarium, and Kids Kingdom.

Q: What is the fee to ride the Tram?

A: A minimal ride-all-day fee of $5 paid at the time of your visit covers an all-day Tram pass. Visitors can purchase tickets (either cash or credit) at Safari Wheels, located in the Village near the top of the escalator, or on the Tram from one of our hosts (cash only). Visitor under two years old ride for free.

Q: How many people does the Tram hold?

A: The Tram can comfortably hold up to 20 people. A Tram Host can verify that space is available.

Q: Is the Tram wheelchair accessible? How many wheelchairs can it accommodate?

A: Yes, there is a wheelchair cart available. It can hold up to six wheelchairs collapsed, or two wheelchairs occupied by guests while the Tram is in motion. If you wish to use the accessible Tram, please call the Zoo in advance at 412-665-3640 to confirm operation.

Q: Can the Tram be privately rented for my group?

A: Yes! See below for private Tram rental information.

Q: What days can I rent the tram?

A: We only offer Tram Rentals on weekdays, due to a higher volume of visitors on weekends which makes tram rentals difficult to navigate along with our regular tram operations. If you have a specific question or request, please reach out to visitorservices@pittsburghzoo.org.

Q: How much does a private Tram rental cost?

A: The basic rental is a flat fee of $125. If you’d like an Educational Facilitator throughout your tour, it is $175.

Q: How long do we have the Tram for a private rental?

A: You can rent the Tram for up to 3 hours.

Q: What does a private Tram rental include?

A: The Tram includes two staff members for the duration of your visit who can take you to different locations upon request. For an additional $50 fee, we can provide an Educational Facilitator to provide more information about the Zoo.

Q: How far in advance can I rent the Tram?

A: We require 1-week minimum notice to book your private rental.

Q: Does the rental price include admission?

A: Admission is not included in your rental. You can purchase tickets online Plan Your Visit | Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium.
