Early Admission to Those with Sensory Processing Needs
April 3, 2025
The Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium invites guests with sensory sensitivities to the return of Sensory Friendly Mornings, sponsored by Clearview, offered 8:00-9:00 a.m. on four dates during peak season: Saturday, April 19; Saturday, June 14; Wednesday, August 20; and Wednesday, October 1, 2025.
Guests can explore the Zoo early on these quiet mornings and enjoy self-guided tours without the presence of large crowds. Early entry is offered on these days to provide reduced wait times and a calmer entry experience. Guests are welcome to remain in the park as long as desired until standard park close at 5:30 p.m.
Zoo Members may take advantage of their free admission for this early morning entry. Non-members are encouraged to purchase advanced daytime entry tickets online for a smoother entry process, though tickets will also be available for purchase on grounds. Discount programs such as OpporZOOnity and Military Admission may also be used during Sensory Friendly Mornings; discount information available here.
The Zoo strives to foster a safe, welcoming, and fun environment for all guests. The Zoo environment that captivates our visitors can be overwhelming for people who have sensitivities to processing certain stimuli. The factors that make a multisensory environment a thrilling experience for many can be too extreme for those with autism, ADHD, and other conditions. The Saturday dates are new this year to increase availability and to avoid pending construction at the Zoo’s front gates.
“The Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium is an energetic, colorful place full of sensory stimuli, and we know this environment can be overwhelming for some guests,” says Dr. Jenn Torpie, Vice President of Education and Community Engagement. “This is a time designed for individuals with sensitivities and their families to explore the Zoo without the crowds and noise. We strive to provide a positive, welcoming experience for every visitor.”
